The so called “Road Tax” in UK (fact: it does not exists)

Looking at my videos, usually cyclists related, I have seen more and more people saying “You don’t pay road tax therefore you have no rights to use the roads!” has shown me how uneducated these people are. So I thought I’d make this post to educate you.

There is NO such as “Road Tax” and have not been around since 1937 where Sir Winston Churchill got rid of it. ALL of the roads including the maintenance of the roads are paid for out of general taxation, which is paid by motorists, cyclists and pedestrians through their council tax & income tax. In other words, ALL tax payers paid for it.

As motorists, what you are paying is “VED Tax” (Vehicle Excise Duty) and is linked to a car’s emissions. The more emissions your car generates, the more VED tax you pay. In case you say “Well, then we pay VED tax therefore we got more rights to use the roads”

Actually it’s not true at all. This money does not go back into maintaining the roads, and does not give motorists any greater right than cyclists to use the roads. The VED money just goes into the Gov’s pocket which will be used elsewhere.

All clear? OK, history lesson’s over!

I have no idea how this driver did not see the red light… the red light was showing at least 18 seconds long before this driver decided to RLJ. While on the queue, due to the vehicles waiting to turn right in front, a taxi decides the best way to do it is to jump the queue by overtaking, past a few numbers of cars waiting in the queue while driving along the wrong side of the road, and then turned right! He had to brake harshly at the end as the bus was turning right as well. All for what? To save a few seconds of waiting? This is NOT how you turn into a junction – this driver was trying to cut corner but backed off when he found that I was approaching the juction. All because he did not want to stop for the traffic approaching on the other side of his lane.
